It begins with a foundation of sterling silver, a precious metal known for its strength and is then coated with a thick layer of 14k gold, 2.5 microns deep. The result? Yes — gold vermeil is real gold, just not solid gold. To be officially classified as vermeil, jewelry must feature a layer of at least 10k gold that’s 2.5 microns thick, electroplated over sterling silver — five times thicker than standard gold plating.

The main difference between gold vermeil and solid gold lies in the base metal: vermeil uses sterling silver, while solid gold is gold throughout. Though not solid, vermeil’s thick layer of precious gold ensures a luxurious, long-lasting finish that beautifully bridges quality and value.

What is 14k Gold Vermeil?

14k gold vermeil is crafted by layering a generous coat of 14k gold over sterling silver. Containing 58.3% pure gold blended with other metals for added strength and durability, 14k gold offers a soft, balanced hue — warm and refined, without the overly bright tone of pure 24K gold.

What is Rhodium?

Some of our pieces are crafted in rhodium vermeil. Rhodium is a rare and precious metal from the platinum family, prized for its luminous silver-white shine and exceptional durability. Naturally resistant to tarnish, corrosion, and scratches, it is an ideal finish for jewelry designed to last. In fine jewelry, rhodium is used to enhance white gold and silver with a polished, mirror-like brilliance while adding an extra layer of protection against tarnishing and everyday wear.

How to Care for Your Vermeil Pieces

To preserve your jewelry’s lasting brilliance, we recommend putting it on after applying lotions and perfumes, and removing it before showering, swimming, or exercising. When not in use, store your pieces in a cool, dry place — ideally in your Liv Taylor pouch — and gently polish with a soft cloth to restore their luminous shine.
